Why The PortPouch™?

At CathCare, infection control isn’t just a clinical priority—it’s personal.

Our founder, Ellie Hunter, knows firsthand the risks and frustrations of long-term IV therapy. After being diagnosed with a rare tick-borne disease, she endured repeated complications from line dislodgement and infection, despite following standard protocols.

Motivated by her own experience and determined to improve care for others, Ellie developed and patented the PortPouch™, a practical, patient-centered solution designed to protect IV catheters, reduce infection risk, and improve quality of life.

Partnering with fellow healthcare innovator Kerrie Burke, Ellie brought the PortPouch™ to life, helping patients and clinicians achieve safer and more effective outcomes.

Existing Solutions Are Uncomfortable and Risky

When Ellie attempted to protect her IV site using a common plastic covering, she quickly learned how unsafe homemade solutions can be.

The non-breathable plastic trapped heat and moisture against her skin, creating a sweaty environment ideal for bacterial growth. It was uncomfortable and nearly led to a serious infection.

  • Pediatric-Friendly Protection

For children, an exposed IV insertion site can be frightening, filled with tubes, tape, and unfamiliar equipment. The PortPouch™ helps ease that fear by gently covering the site with a soft, protective, breathable barrier. A window allows caregivers and clinicians to monitor the insertion site without alarming the child.

By hiding what’s scary while still ensuring visibility and safety, the PortPouch™ offers comfort, protection, and peace of mind for both kids and parents.

  • Standard Practice is Ineffective

The white mesh sleeve, commonly used in IV care, quickly proved inadequate during Ellie’s treatment. It rolled down with even slight movement, failed to hold extension lines securely, and caused constant itching and discomfort. Most importantly, it offered minimal coverage and no real protection. This frustrating experience highlighted a gap in standard practice, one that the PortPouch™ was specifically designed to solve with a secure, breathable, and patient-friendly alternative.
